If your watermelon has these warning signs, it’s best to toss it

Why It’s Important to Check Your Watermelon

Fresh fruits like watermelon can spoil quicker than expected, especially after being cut or left in warm conditions. As it breaks down, bacteria can multiply rapidly, increasing the risk of stomach discomfort or foodborne illness. A quick inspection can go a long way in keeping you safe.

7 Signs Your Watermelon Has Gone Bad

1. Unpleasant or Sour Smell
A fresh watermelon has a mild, sweet aroma. If it smells sour, fermented, or just “off,” it’s a strong sign that it has started to spoil.

2. Slimy or Sticky Feel
Healthy watermelon flesh should be firm and juicy. If it feels slippery, mushy, or sticky, it’s no longer fresh.

3. Faded or Odd Color
Good watermelon is typically bright red or pink. If you notice dullness, brown patches, or unusual dark spots, it may be deteriorating.

4. Mold Presence
Any white fuzz or green/black spots on the rind or flesh mean the fruit should be discarded immediately. Cutting away moldy parts is not safe.

5. Fizzy or Tingling Sensation
If the fruit tastes slightly carbonated or tingles on your tongue, it’s likely fermenting and should not be eaten.

6. Too Soft or Collapsing Texture
If the flesh lacks firmness or falls apart easily, the watermelon is overripe and close to spoiling.

7. Strange or Bitter Taste
If the flavor is anything other than sweet and refreshing—such as sour or bitter—it’s best to stop eating it.
